The Strohauser Plate is an island within
the German river Weser. It is 470 ha large and has to present a high density of breeding
meadow birds like lapwings and redshanks. In winter time there are flocks of roosting
geese. Agriculture is very difficult on this island because it is not easy to transport products from the island to the consumers. 50% of the island is in use, the others are reeds and very attractive for reed birds. The island is occupied by a society for bird protection (Der Mellumrat).
